The countdown is on. Pre-season isn’t just about getting fit again — it’s about building the speed, strength, and skills to set you up for your best season yet. Whether you’re stepping back onto court after a break, or revving up for another big season, pre-season training sets the tone for everything that follows.
At Gilbert Netball, we’ve created the ultimate guide to help you gear up, train smart, and step onto court ready to own the game.
Why is Pre-Season Training Important?
Pre-season is your chance to sharpen every aspect of your game. It’s not just about fitness — it’s about preparing your body for the unique demands of netball: quick changes of direction, explosive jumps, and relentless intensity.
A strong pre-season helps you:
-
Build endurance to last four quarters.
-
Develop strength to stay 'stay in the fight' in tight contests.
-
Improve speed and agility for rapid changes of play.
-
Reduce the risk of injury, especially in ankles and knees.
Think of it as your foundation: get it right now, and you’ll feel the difference all season long.
Your Kit & Equipment Essentials
To perform at your best, you need the right kit. Pre-season is the perfect time to check your kit bag and make sure everything is match-ready.

Four Essential Strength & Conditioning Exercises for Netball
Building strength and resilience now will pay off when the season heats up. Add these four key exercises to your pre-season sessions:
-
Lunges with Rotation
Builds lower-body strength and balance while mimicking netball’s dynamic movements. -
Single-Leg Hops
Improves ankle stability and explosive take-off — crucial for jumping and quick cuts. -
Plank with Shoulder Taps
Core stability is everything in netball. This exercise builds strength through your trunk and shoulders, helping you stay strong in contests. -
Squat Jumps
Develops explosive power for rebounds, intercepts, and fast starts.
Aim for 3 sets of 10–12 reps for each, two to three times a week during pre-season.
