Netball 101

Gilbert Netball have highlighted the first introductory steps for newbies to netball!

The team

A netball team consists of 7 players on the court at one time with up to 5 substitutes on the side line. The following are the positions as seen on court with each position taking up a specific section of the court: Goal Shooter (GS), Goal Attack (GA), Wing Attack (WA), Centre (C), Wing Defence (WD), Goal Defence (GD), Goal Keeper (GK).

The aim of the game

The aim of the game is to score as many goals as possible, with only the GS and GA being allowed to score.

3 key rules to get your started

1) The number one rule is that you cannot run with the ball. Once you have caught the ball, your landing foot - the foot you placed down first, cannot be moved, the other foot can be used to pivot.

2) Once you have caught the ball, you then have 3 seconds to pass it onto another one of your team mates. If you have not passed the ball in 3 seconds, the ball is turned over to the other team.

3) Finally, if the other team has the ball and you are defending, you must stand a minimum of 3 feet away from your opponent or a penalty will be given against you.

Things to remember when turning up to training or match day

Remember to remove all jewellery before you step foot on the court and make sure your nails are filed down to below the tops of your fingers - the umpires always check!

Also it is a really good idea to come with your hair tied up, and with a water bottle to remain hydrated!
